Are you considering moving to Hardwick, a popular village in the heart of Cambridgeshire? If you are searching for a place that blends rich history, vibrant community life, and modern amenities, look no further, as we have loads to tell you about this friendly village. Hardwick is a parish in the county of South Cambridgeshire, with the addition of a large housing estate sitting north of the original village, where the roads take the names of different trees…we like to throw in the odd random fact. But is it the right place to call your forever home? Let’s find out…

Who fancies a little history lesson?

Hardwick’s history stretches back through the centuries, marked by significant events and changes that have shaped its character and community…a community that the local residents are proud of. From its humble beginnings as an agricultural settlement to its growth into a modern-day village, Hardwick has undergone various transformations reflective of the changing times and the increased wants and needs of the people who live there. The earliest recorded history of Hardwick dates back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was listed as ‘Harduic,’ indicating its existence during the Norman Conquest of England. Every day is a school day, folks! During this period, the village would have likely (but don’t quote us on this) been a small, agrarian community, typical of many settlements in medieval England, where farming was the primary occupation of its inhabitants.

During the early modern period, Hardwick, like a vast proportion of England, would have experienced significant social and economic changes…much like we are experiencing now, but that’s a soap box topic for another day! The enclosure movement, which saw common lands being privatised, would have impacted the rural landscape and the livelihoods of many villagers. By the 19th century, Hardwick became part of the broader agricultural and industrial developments occurring in Cambridgeshire and across England. The rise of mechanised farming methods and the expansion of transportation networks brought changes to the village’s economy and way of life, causing locals to flee to nearby towns and cities seeking employment opportunities. However, it wasn’t all bad. The expansion of nearby cities like Cambridge and the demand to reach them improved transportation links, making commuting easier and opening up new opportunities for the residents.

There are two sites in Hardwick with original water pumps, one near the church and the other quite central, just off Pump Lane. The village’s bakery was located next to a row of houses just to the east of the pub at the end closest to the church, and the only remnant is the shell of the building, which has become a garage [as taken from Wikipedia]. That’s the history part done for now.

But what about the modern day?

Today, Hardwick is a thriving village with a vibrant community. In recent decades, Hardwick has evolved into a primarily residential village, with many of its residents commuting to nearby towns and cities for work. However, it has retained its rural charm and sense of community. The village has also seen new developments in housing and amenities to accommodate its growing population. Basically, it’s the perfect mix of old and new.

Convenience is key for most homeowners and tenants alike, and Hardwick doesn’t disappoint when it comes to connectivity. Situated just a stone’s throw away from Cambridge city centre (6.5 miles to be exact), residents can enjoy easy access to major roadways like the A428, A14 and M11, making commuting a breeze. For those who prefer public transport, reliable bus services (or so we like to think) connect Hardwick to the surrounding area, ensuring that you’re never far from where you need to be. With the growing trend of working from home, people are now moving out to villages like Hardwick, which offer a peaceful working environment but with the option of popping into the office without any significant inconvenience.

Life in Hardwick revolves around its tight-knit community and mix of amenities. But what does that include? Let us tell you!

Convenience Store and Post Office: If you need to stock up on essentials – such as Maltesers and Merlot – the village is home to a well-stocked convenience store. No one wants to trek 20 miles just for a point of milk, so that’s the first box ticked.

Countryside: For strolls or family outings, the surrounding countryside offers scenic walks and large green spaces for a game of football or a picnic with friends. Hardwick also has a range of play areas for children or adults if that’s your thing, so there is always something to do on a dry afternoon, the weekend before payday, when our wallets are empty.

Community Activities: If you are looking to build new relationships, then Hardwick is full of community groups and activities to suit every interest, many revolving around the village hall and the social club, which serve as hubs for social gatherings and events. If you are keen to try something new (maybe dabble in a bit of yoga or cricket), the move to a new community could be the perfect time. There is even a Scout and Guides group for the kiddies; there really is something for everyone. Alternatively, if a glass of something alcoholic is more your thing, then Hardwick has a village pub, The Blue Lion, which is a popular meeting point for the locals.

Transport Links: We have covered this already, so we won’t bore you again but, in a nutshell, Hardwick is a short drive from Cambridge but with excellent public transport links if the thought of parking in a busy town sends your head into a spin…we wouldn’t blame you!

Education: Hardwick has its own pre-school and primary school, which means school runs (literally!) are convenient from most places within the village. Children over 11 usually attend nearby Comberton Village Collage and sixth form, which has a fantastic reputation and ranked as Outstanding in its most recent Ofsted inspection.

So, what sets Hardwick apart from other villages?

From neighbourly chats over the garden fence to gatherings at the local pub, Hardwick offers a warmth and comfy slipper feeling that many villages don’t have anymore. Whether you’re raising a family, starting a new chapter on your own, or simply seeking a change of pace, this village ticks all the boxes. It’s a little gem in the Cambridge countryside.
